From sports fields to new classrooms: MU unveils investment plans

Masaryk University is entering the year 2025 with three dozen funded investment projects, which were presented on January 29 at a meeting of stakeholders and suppliers organised by MU together with the South Moravian Regional Authority and the Brno University of Technology.

The presentation of investment events took place at the Bohunice University Campus.

What are these investment projects? I went to find out at the Presentation of Investment Projects 2025, which took place at the Bohunice University Campus. I found my way to auditorium B11/334 surprisingly easily, which is always a pleasure in a large complex. When I arrived, I found myself among sixty to seventy people, mostly contractors involved in construction, design and other related fields.

The event lasted the whole morning and I personally was most interested in what my alma mater, Masaryk University, had planned for the following year. Its representative Martin Hadaš from the Public Tender Office invited investment project managers from the Infrastructure Development Office to make a presentation, starting with Irena Čierna, who was later joined by Ladislav Gróf.

The presentation of the upcoming investment projects could not begin with anything else but the biggest one of all – the construction of a multi-purpose sports complex. The sports ground will be built at the Faculty of Sports Studies at a cost of approximately CZK 370 million, and construction will begin this June. By the end of 2027, the campus will have an outdoor area with athletics and football facilities and a multi-purpose hall next to it. All of this, of course, will be state-of-the-art, using heat pumps, solar panels and heat recovery systems.

The second largest investment project is the reconstruction of the building of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, specifically Block E, which is currently unused and in a poor state of repair. The complete refurbishment will cost CZK 72 million. “For this year and next, we have secured funding for the reconstruction and we are planning a complete renovation of the building, including structural modifications, external insulation, roof repairs and modernisation of the interior. The building will then be used by the Faculty’s Language Centre,” explained Ladislav Gróf.

The Faculty of Arts will see the completion of the archaeological station in Těšetice.

The next major project is the completion of the renovation and construction of a new five-storey building for the Faculty of Informatics. “As part of the event, suppliers were presented with audiovisual equipment, camera systems and interior design worth around CZK 67 million,” said Martin Hadaš.

If you have not yet found your faculty on the list, do not despair, there is something for everyone. For example, the Faculty of Arts can look forward to the completion of an archaeological station, while the Faculty of Education will see the reconstruction of its water and sewerage systems, as well as a new outdoor classroom. The Faculty of Medicine will refurbish rooms in Building F01, the Faculty of Social Studies will get modern study rooms and the Faculty of Science will see interior improvements in Building A08 on campus. The Rector's Office building will undergo facade refurbishment, and students in the Kounicova Dormitory can look forward to new interior furnishings at the Support Centre for Students with Special Needs (Teiresias).

Masaryk University is entering the New Year with an ambitious modernisation plan that will benefit all faculties and key buildings. If all goes according to plan, the university will not only have better facilities for teaching and research, but also a more modern and sustainable environment for its students and staff.
