MU campus to grow and build new sporting facilities

The Bohunice University Campus is set to expand once again. In another major investment project, Masaryk University is taking sports facilities on campus to a whole new level. The sports hall and outdoor sports oval will be completed by 2028.

Students of Masaryk University will soon be able to use a multifunctional sports hall and an outdoor sports area for athletic disciplines, which will also include small football pitches, streetball, a training area and the necessary sanitary and technical facilities. The sports complex will be connected to the existing buildings of the Faculty of Sports Studies. It will be used not only for sports and physical education classes, but also for the Physiotherapy programme.

“We strive to manage the renewal, development and construction of the University's infrastructure in a sustainable and responsible manner to ensure adequate and functional facilities for quality teaching, excellent research and a welcoming environment for our students and staff. This kind of infrastructure is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for any university to attract quality applicants and promote healthy lifestyles. This project overcomes Masaryk University’s long-standing handicap in this area and will bring a quality standard in line with current Czech conditions,” says MU Rector Martin Bareš.

Construction of Masaryk University’s multi-purpose sports complex is due to start this autumn. A contractor is currently being selected for the project. “The sports infrastructure in the form of a new complex on the Bohunice campus will not only improve the educational opportunities of the Faculty of Sports Studies, but will also be used for the teaching of physical education to all students of Masaryk University and other activities promoting a healthy lifestyle, including possible cooperation with local sports clubs aimed at the movement of children and young people,” says the Masaryk University bursar David Póč.

The entire complex, including the outdoor sports grounds and the multi-purpose hall, is designed to meet the standards and requirements for national sports competitions in the Czech Republic. “For the Faculty of Sports Studies, the provision of new outdoor sports facilities is essential because of the long-standing lack of teaching space and areas that require specialised equipment. And this need is really acute, because the cost of renting suitable areas from other donors is increasing year by year,” explains Lenka Goldmannová, bursar of the Faculty of Sports Studies.

The project aligns with MU Strategic Plan Objective 6.2: “Sustainably and responsibly manage the renewal, development and construction of the university infrastructure as well as the acquisition of related technologies and equipment to ensure adequate functional facilities for excellent research and quality teaching as well as a pleasant environment for students and staff”. The common aim of this synergistic action is to further develop the parts of Masaryk University located in the Bohunice Campus to create a highly collaborative environment for intensive cooperation within the university and to create an integrated space for education and transfer of knowledge gained from experience to common practice. This need is fully in line with the dynamic development of the disciplines represented on the campus.

“Students and the public will soon be able to see a detailed presentation of the entire sports complex including the outdoor sports ground and the sports hall,” adds Bursar Póč. The visualisation is already available on the architectural studio’s website.

Construction of the hall is scheduled to begin this year and be completed next year. The construction of the outdoor athletics oval is scheduled for 2027-2028.
