Football is not ice hockey: Muni Blues defeated by VUT 1-2

The match was watched by 4,000 football fans.

The Masaryk University team never gave up.

A thrilling drama until the very end. That was the first football match between teams from Masaryk University (Muni) and Brno University of Technology (VUT). Unfortunately for the Muni Blues the end of the match didn’t bring the coveted victory. On 19 April the players of Masaryk University were defeated by VUT’s Reds 1-2. The match, organised by students of both universities, was watched by 4,000 football fans at the league stadium on Srbská street, Brno. The football contest was inspired by the traditional Brno Ice Hockey Battle of the Universities.

The Masaryk University team did its utmost to find an equalizing goal until the very end. With just a few minutes remaining, the Blues put the Reds under such pressure that one of the VUT defenders had to rescue his team by clearing off the goal line. But the Blues fell just short of saving the match.

“We have seen a wonderful match of high quality. I couldn’t be more satisfied with the players’ work in the second half. But in the first half we struggled to find our style of play and were not strong enough to turn the tables,“ said Karel Večeřa, the Masaryk University and former Czech premier league coach, about the Blues’ evening performance.

Coach Večeřa was unhappy about conceding a goal in the 10th minute of the game but delighted by the work of the student organisers. “It was a great idea to organise such an event. It could be the start of a great tradition,” he said.

The match was refereed by Petr Švancara, a former player for the local Zbrojovka Brno team, who is still an icon for many Czech football fans. “Švancara read the game very well,” said coach Večeřa.
